Religion & Politics

A print, web, and social campaign aimed at unblurring the lines between church and state.

The world we live in suffers from many impossible problems, societal issues that cannot be fixed with something as simple as a wave of the hand or a single wealthy angel benefactor, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be making ourselves and our communities better places. Working in a group with classmates Dylan Gutierrez, Grace Marcy, Caitlin Scheib, and Sia Tyagi, we decided to create a social campaign discussing the dangers of politics and religion influencing one another.

Our project consisted of four case studies regarding current issues: abortion rights, religion in schools, the “don’t say gay” bill, and the Muslim travel ban. Using these topics we developed a campaign consisting of both print and digital elements. For the print aspect we created a series of posters, zines, and stickers, and for the digital aspect a website and Instagram account were made.

The posters are collaged images of old renaissance paintings and monochrome protest images to represent the clashing of old beliefs with new ideals from both sides of the political spectrum. The collaged assets are printed on separate layers of vellum -- peeling back the components reveals hidden text that speaks to the importance of our cause.

The posters and smaller collage elements can also be found printed on the zines and used as spot illustration throughout the digital aspects of the campaign. Our sticker sheets are a sort of DIY collage, where individuals can arrange the separate components to create their own design that promotes the campaign in a truly unique way.
